Combined Charging System (“CCS”) for Electric Vehicle Charging Takes Center Stage at CharIN Interop Event in Detroit, USA

The four day event attracted global leaders in eMoblity, including more than 100 participants, active testers and observers.

The 1st CharIN North American CCS and ISO/IEC 15118 Interop Event, featuring the 9th CCS & ISO/IEC 15118 Testing Symposium, took place from September 10 - 13, 2018 in Detroit, USA.

Next Energy, one of the main sponsors, hosted the event at its beautiful faciity, and was joined by other generous sponsors - Daimler Trucks North America, IEEE, Phoenix Contact, IoTecha, Vector and Keysight - all of whom helped to make this triple event a resounding success.

The first day started with a warm welcome by Next Energy´s CEO Jim Saber. Then the CharIN North America spokesperson, Oleg Logvinov, introduced the participants to a versatile program consisting of different panel discussions around electromobility and EV charging with CCS. Building up the CharIN ecosystem and accelerating the EV revolution were topics discussed during the panel sessions, which offered different perspectives from representatives of car manufacturers, local utility providers and governmental institutions. Practical approaches for building up the necessary grid infrastructure were evaluated during a panel consisting of international representatives, and a global grid integration project was presented to the audience. A discussion of the extension of the CCS ecosystem to Commercial vehicles and a tour around the Interop testing lot rounded out the first day.

Days 2 and 3 were completely dedicated to the 9th Testing Symposium, where various EV and EVSE manufacturers brought in their cars and chargers to verify interoperability in the field with both AC and DC charging. About 90 observers attended each day and saw first-hand how smart and easy e-charging works with CCS. “Seeing is believing” and this testing event certainly contributed to the growing confidence in the versatility of charging with CCS.

As CharIN advocates for a holistic approach, a special Task Force was created at the beginning of this year to define the requirements for CCS compatible Commercial Vehicles (heavy trucks). A special working group meeting was held on September 13th, 2018, day 4 of our event. The initiative from the North America membership is sponsored and driven by Daimler Trucks North America. There were approximately 40 participants in this working group meeting, bringing their expertise and passion to this important topic.

The conference was a new benchmark for the development of CCS and the creation of a global, interoperable ecosystem. The detailed agenda of the event is available online:

CharIN would like to thank the complete organization team recruited from the North America membership for its effort, time and enthusiasm spent on the preparation of this event. Special thanks to the panelists who went on stage to discuss not only with other panelists but with the audience about the future of e-mobility driven by CCS. Special thanks are also offered to the Verisco team, which strongly supported the Interop event.

We sincerely thank all participants and attendees for joining us and for making the 1st CharIN North America Interop event such a great success!

Many thanks to the sponsors who contributed not only with manpower but also financially to make this event happen. These sponsors, described below, representing different types of business, are part of the complete EV charging value chain.
