The first CharIN North America conference took place on March 19th at the Fremont Marriott Silicon Valley Hotel located in Fremont, California. As a clear illustration of the rapidly growing momentum behind CCS, the ballroom was packed, with many attendees standing at the back of the room. The conference was Co-sponsored by IEEE and numerous demos were on display by the exhibitors, IoTecha, Vector, ITT Cannon and IEEE. BMW, Daimler, Lucid Motors and Energica showed their exciting new electric vehicles in front of the venue. During the conference, experts from CharIN and e-mobility-related industries discussed the future of e-mobility powered by Combined Charging System (CCS), the standard for charging battery-powered electric vehicles of all kinds.
The conference was opened by Claas Bracklo, Chairman of CharIN e.V., Axel Willikens, a CharIN Steering Committee member, and Oleg Logvinov, the CharIN North America spokesperson. The interactive opening session shined the spotlight on the history of smart EV charging and the origins of CharIN, highlighting the decade-long path to worldwide interoperability and the growth of CharIN from 12 to over 120 members in just two years.
A keynote speech, titled “250,000 Electric Vehicle Chargers by 2025: Spurring the construction of infrastructure to reduce carbon pollution and improve public health and the environment”, was given by Mr. John Kato, Deputy Director of the Fuels and Transportation Division at the California Energy Commission. He talked about California’s most recent investments in charging infrastructure to support widespread plug-in electric vehicle adoption. In January, Governor Edmund G Brown Jr. ordered the deployment of 5 million zero emission vehicles onto California roads by 2030. In support of this goal, Governor Brown directed California’s agencies to work with private industry to spur the construction and installation of 250,000 electric vehicle chargers, including 10,000 direct current fast chargers. Mr. Kato also discussed the Energy Commis-sion’s policy analyses, planning, and investment programs—and highlighted the opportunities for private investment to lead the transformation to electric transportation.
The main part of the conference consisted of three different panel discussions in which speakers from renowned electromobility stakeholders shared their insights on the following topics: 1. Driving the EV revolution with Combined Charging System (CCS) - a worldwide game changer 2. Setting a global standard – enabling e-mobility with CCS 3. Startups and Investors – driving CCS based e-mobility through disruptive innovation.
Eight panelists from numerous OEMs and Charging Station manufacturers joined the first panel session led by Oleg Logvinov, IoTecha, and shared their experiences with CCS and discussed new opportunities enabled by CCS. This panel highlighted the breadth of CCS applications, from motorcycles to electric vehicles to busses and beyond.
In the second panel discussion, led by Mohamad Abdul-Hak, Mercedes Benz, five panelists talked about setting a global standard and enabling e-mobility with CCS. This panel was motivated by one of the primary objectives of CharIN, the establishment of the Combined Charging System (CCS) as the global standard for all types of charging of battery powered electric vehicles. Panelists discussed the creation of a framework enabling e-mobility with CCS, as well as opportunities and challenges from the perspective of service providers, tool and component manufacturers, and others. Also, the role of standardization, interoperability and regulatory framework as enabling elements of e-mobility was carefully examined.
In the last panel discussion, moderated by Noel Crisostomo, California Ener-gy Commission, startups and investors discussed their thoughts about driving CCS based e-mobility through disruptive innovation. During this panel there was an exciting debate enabled by the diverse points of views brought to the table by investors and startups. The conference participants heard from investors and learned what they see as growth opportunities in the market, and from startups about driving disruptive innovation while leveraging CCS for their businesses. Attendees of the conference found this session to be very inspirational and reflective of the explosive growth of the CCS based ecosystem and market.
Seeing is believing and that was the key goal of the conference. Several state of the art EV products and services were presented in an indoor and outdoor exhibition. The participants enjoyed the exhibitions and the networking op-portunities during the breaks and the reception in the late afternoon.
CharIN would like to thank all participants and attendees for making the 1st CharIN North America Conference a great success! It was an excellent opportunity to exchange ideas about the future of CCS and e-mobility and brainstorm about new growth opportunities. The conference was a new benchmark for the development of CCS and the creation of a global, interoperable ecosystem.
